  • Wear Resistance Test of PVD Coating
    Mar 31, 2018

Wear is one of the main forms of destruction and failure of PVD coatings. Evaluating the quality of the wear resistance of the coated film is critical to control the quality of the coated product. Therefore, it plays a decisive role in the development and application of coating technology. The coating abrasion resistance refers to the ability of the coating surface to resist some kind of mechanical action. It is usually measured by the grindstone or sand impact test method. It is one of the important characteristics of the coating that is often subjected to mechanical wear during use. And it closely related to the coating other physical properties such as hardness, adhesion, flexibility and so on.

The industrial developed countries have different wear test methods for different materials. For example, the Japanese industrial standard JISH8503 specifies the test methods for the wear resistance of metal coatings, and ISH8615 describes the wear resistance test of Chromium Electroplated coatings. At present, there is no test standard for wear resistance of PVD coating in China, so similar standards can only be used for testing. It is recommended that the wear resistance of PVD coating be evaluated according to the international standard IS08251-87 and the Japanese standard JISH8682. Both of these standards specify the use of a friction wheel wear tester to measure the wear resistance of anodized aluminum and aluminum alloy films. When testing PVD coatings, it simply replaces the coating on the standard test specimen with a PVD coating. The test method is to make the coated layer and the abrasive sandpaper glued on the outer edge of the friction wheel performs the planar reciprocating motion under the specified test conditions. After each double stroke, the friction wheel rotates by two small angles (0.9), and the specified number after sub-grinding, the wear resistance of the coating is evaluated by the reduction of the coating thickness or the coating quality, and by calculating the wear resistance thereof. Because the test conditions of this method are easy to control, and there are no more difficult problems to control, such as grinding wheel dressing, aging, sand flow rate and sand beam shape, and so on, so the repeatability of the test results is better.
