Molecular number density

Jun 19, 2025|

Molecular number density (unit: m-3) : The number of molecules in the volume around a certain point in a gas at a certain instant, divided by that volume. 17. The average free path: The distance traveled by a molecule in each consecutive two collisions with other gas molecules is called the free path. The average value of quite a number of different free paths is called the average free path. 18. Collision rate: The average number of collisions a molecule (or other specified particle) experiences relative to other gas molecules (or other specified particles) within a given time interval, divided by that time. This average number of collisions should be obtained with a sufficient number of molecules and a sufficiently long time interval. 19. Volume collision rate: Within a given time interval, the average number of collisions between gas molecules within a spatial range around a specified point divided by the volume of that time and that spatial range. The time interval and volume taken should not be too small. 20. Gas volume: The product of the volume occupied by an ideal gas in equilibrium and its pressure. This value must indicate the gas temperature or the value converted to 20℃. Note: The volume of gas refers to two-thirds of the intrinsic energy (or potential energy) of the gas within the volume occupied by that amount of gas. 21. Gas diffusion: The movement of gas in another medium due to a concentration gradient. The medium can be another gas (diffusion in this case is called mutual diffusion) or a condensable substance. 22. Diffusion system: The ratio of the absolute value of the mass flow rate through a unit area to the normal concentration gradient of that unit area.
