Main properties of DLC coating-Mechanical Properties

A.Hardness and elastic modulus. The hardness and elastic modulus of DLC films prepared by different deposition methods vary greatly. The hardness of DLC films can reach or even exceed that of diamond by magnetic filtering cathode arc method, and the maximum hardness of DLC films prepared by cathode arc method can reach more than 50GPa. The hardness of DLC films prepared by ion source combined with non-equilibrium magnetron sputtering reached 21GPa. The composition in the film layer has a certain influence on the hardness of the film layer, and the incorporation of Si and N can improve the hardness of DLC film. DLC film has a high elastic modulus, which is lower than that of diamond (1100GPa), but significantly higher than that of general metals and ceramics.

B.Internal stress and bonding strength. The internal stress and bonding strength of the film are two important factors that determine the stability and service life of the film and affect the performance of the film. The DLC film with high internal stress and low bonding strength is prone to crack, fold or even fall off in the application, so the prepared DLC film should have moderate compressive stress and high bonding strength. Most studies show that the film/base bonding strength of DLC film deposited directly on the matrix is generally relatively low. The intermediate gradient transition layer of Ti/TiN/TiCN/TiC is adopted to improve the bonding strength of DLC film and the matrix. The bonding strength of DLC film deposited on the die steel reaches 44N-74N. The total thickness of the membrane can reach 5 microns.
