Oxidation Temperature Of PVD Coating
Sep 10, 2021| Oxidation temperature of PVD coating
The oxidation temperature is the temperature at which the coating begins to decompose. The higher the oxidation temperature is, the more favorable it is to cut at a high temperature. Although the hardness of TiAlN coating may be lower than that of TiCN coating at room temperature, it has proved to be much more effective than TiCN coating at high temperatures. The reason why TiAlN coatings retain their hardness at high temperatures is that a layer of alumina is formed between the tool and the chip, which transfers heat from the tool to the workpiece or chip. Carbide tools typically have higher cutting speeds than HSS tools, making TiAlN the preferred coating for carbide tools. Carbide drills and end mills often use this PVD TiAlN coating.
