Plasma surface activation to improve adhesion
Aug 09, 2020| Plasma surface activation to improve adhesion
Plasma surface activation can effectively change the surface of a polymer by attaching polar (in this case oxygen-containing) chemical groups to the polymer surface. Many polymers, especially polyolefin such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are chemically inert, do not bind easily to other materials, and do not bond well to inks, paints, and glues. The reason is that there are no polar and reactive functional groups in the structure.
Plasma surface activation enables many polymers to accept adhesives and coatings. Oxygen is usually used as a process gas, but many plasma activations can also be performed only in ambient air. Parts can remain active for minutes to months, depending on the specific material that has been plasma-treated. Polypropylene, for example, can still be reprocessed a few weeks after treatment.
