In the tube of a hot cathode ionization gauge, electrons emitted by a high-temperature cathode filament with a certain negative potential are accelerated by the anode to obtain enough energy, which can cause ionization of molecules when they collide with molecules in the gas, resulting in positive ions and electrons. Since the number of collisions between electrons and gas molecules in a certain flight path is proportional to the density of gas molecules, that is, proportional to the pressure of the gas, the number of positive ions produced by ionization collisions is also proportional to the pressure of the gas. By using the collector to receive the positive ions, the gas pressure can be indicated according to the size of the measured ion flow.
