The speed at which the ion pump pumps hydrogen

The ion pump pumps the hydrogen gas at a very high rate, mainly because the hydrogen gas can be diffused deeper into the cathode and is difficult to release by subsequent ion bombardment. Moreover, the diffusion of hydrogen in titanium materials is very high, so it can be considered that when pumping hydrogen, the ion pump always works in an unsaturated state. The same ion pump can pump hydrogen more than twice as fast as nitrogen at the same pressure.

The molecular weight of hydrogen is very small, and the sputtering rate (sputtering yield) is very low, so when the ion pump is working at very low pressure, if the gas source is mainly hydrogen, the fresh cathode material sputtered will be very little, and the probability of hydrogen being consumed by reaction with it is relatively low. However, if the pumped gas contains other heavier gases, the sputtering rate will increase correspondingly, and a higher pumping speed for hydrogen will be produced.
