The Working Principle Of The Helium Mass Spectrometer Leak Detector
Nov 28, 2023| The working principle of the helium mass spectrometer leak detector is as follows: collect and ionize the gas sample in the tested part, and distinguish the different types of gas according to the different characteristics of the ion mass charge ratio by magnetic deflection separation principle. The instrument only has a response signal to the tracer gas helium. Once the signal response occurs, it indicates that helium enters the tested part through the leak hole, thus indicating the position and size of the leak hole. Helium mass spectrum leak detector is the most sensitive, best performance, and most widely used leak detection device.
As for how to use helium for leak detection, there are two methods in practice: the "integral" test requires that the tested part be placed in a closed device; The "local" detection method is to pressurize or drain helium inside the tested part. In both detection methods, helium is drilled out through a possible leak hole and then into a mass spectrometer for analysis.
However, there are some drawbacks to using helium as a tracer gas. For example, organic materials such as rubber and plastics often absorb helium and then slowly release it after absorption. All ion collectors will have a memory effect on helium, that is, helium ions hit the ion collector, stored for a certain time, and then slowly released, resulting in background and noise.
