How are diamond-like (DLC) coatings made?

Diamond-like (DLC) coatings can be produced using a variety of thin film deposition technologies, including physical vapor deposition (PVD), plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD), cathode arc deposition (CAD), and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). What all of these processes have in common is a vacuum environment in which the high-energy pretreated carbon atoms cool rapidly upon contact with the substrate surface.
