Diamond-like (DLC) coatings are as hard or harder than natural diamonds, and cutting tools are coated with extremely hard and low-friction DLC, which can scratch the diamond, leaving a scratch on it. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings measure 5000-9000HV in the Vickers Hardness Test, and other types of hardness range from 1000-4000HV. Therefore, DLC coatings can replace some properties of diamonds and be applied to the surface of many common materials.
